The Mission
Adæpt want to enable people with cerebral palsy to live a life without limitations.
Social Background Intro
Nearly 4 per 1,000 children were diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.

Occurrence
About 764,000 children and adults suffering Cerebral Palsy in the U.S.

Number
Unique hand postures and mismatch interactions create endless difficulties in daily life.
Situation
Persona
Steve R’s hobby is to paint and create using Photoshop, and the attached picture is one of his awarded paintings. Steve told me that "I dream every day that I can paint independently." This statement deeply touched me, so I sat down to observe him using the computer.

Key Insights
The CP artists have difficulties in using computer independently because the interaction mismatching exist between them with both hardwares and the softwares. Being able to use the system independently is extremely important for them that they feel dignified.

Focus Indicator
However
Only the focus indicator is not enough to solve the user's problem, there are limitations at the physical level.
How Might We:
Find a solution that has minimal or even zero ergonomic requirement to user’s hand and arm?
With this basic concept working and running, what Adapt want to achieve is just beginning.
Like you and me, people with CP also need to social, work and entertain. The Focus indicator does help merged the mismatched human interaction. But for complex scenario, what it can do is limited, which lead to inefficient operation.
To bring the experience to next level, we created the Adapt mode and Adapt tool.
Adapt Mode
Scenario: For software with many functions or complex operations.
Benefit: Defining modes can help users optimize their operations and focus on the small part of the functionality they need most.
Adapt Tool
Scenario: For shortcut operations; Can be customized by user.
Benefit: Reduce the difficulty of operation; simplify the operation steps; make the operation more convenient.

The Adapt Story
This is a story about Jacob, an artist with cerebral palsy who demonstrates the significant impact & meaning of the Adæpt device in his life. Click the “Detail” button on the right to see the case study for social, work, and entertainment scenarios.

Adæpt - Connected Help
Need Help? Let’s Connect!
Instead of letting users yelling to their care takers, we designed Connected help especially for this kind of situation. No matter where the care taker is--at home, on the way to work or to shopping, CP users can reach them by simply pressing the help button.
